The Monument to the Builders of Nova Gorica

On the eastern side of France Bevk Square, next to a bronze model of the town plan in concept, there is a monument to the builders of Nova Gorica made under the authorship of the sculptor Zmago Posega which was erected in September 2008.

By this monument the city has paid its tribute to all of the volunteers who helped to build Nova Gorica 60 years ago. After the Second World War, when the town of Gorica was attributed to Italy and the Primorska region was left without an administrative, cultural and economic centre, the then Government decided to build a “new” (“nova” in Slovenian) Gorica. The construction of Nova Gorica was entrusted to the young people who, within the framework of the youth work brigades, started their work as early as the end of 1947. Since there was almost no construction machinery available at that time, their basic tools were spades, picks, and wooden wheelbarrows. Cultural and sports activities also took place at the construction site.
