The library was founded on 18th of January, 1949 in Šempeter and was first named Okrajna študijska knjižnica Gorica (District study library of Gorica). The name of the library changed in 1970 when France Bevk, a well known Slovenian author, died. Its activity covers an area of 60.000 residents and offers more than 480.000 units of material.
The building has 4 floors – 4500 sqm for library stock.
Below the ground level there is a multi-purpose hall.
On the ground floor there are books for children and young people, books on art, sports and fiction in Slovene and several foreign languages.
On the first floor there are scientific books, audio visual material, music papers, maps. Two special departments are set on the first floor: one keeps serial publications (around 600 different titles every year), the other keeps local studies collection (Goriška and a part of Italy where Slovenians live).
Library access to its members in addition to the material loan also gives access to the internet, many databases and space for studying.
Branch libraries
The library has seven branch libraries in small villages around Nova Gorica: Bilje, Branik, Deskle, Kanal, Prvačina, Renče, Solkan.
A book mobile unit is also available – the mobile visits 81 locations in Goriška region every month and also two towns in Italy – Doberdob and Špeter Slovenov (Doberdo del Lago and San Pietro al Natisone).
The membership card is valid in all library units (central library, branches and the mobile).
