Rare are the castles in the Primorska region that have their origin in the Middle Ages. The nature here offered the feudal lords scarce opportunity to build fortified castles on the top of steep faces. They had to accept only smaller elevations. After the castles were built they experienced their historical moment and then they became convenient stone-pits for all those in the vicinity who needed stones to build. The spot where the Rihemberk castle was built has a remarkable settling history. Archeologists here came across traces of an iron-age fort and at the foothill even Roman ceramics were found.
The Rihembek knights, the original owners of the castle, started to appear in written sources to begin with the year 1118, today however, there are no facilities to be found dated that early. The Rihemberk family was probably liegemen of the Counts of Gorizia, because the latter let out the castle on lease to different noble families when the Rihemberk family died out. Later on the castle was given in pawn and even later in full property to the Lanthieri family who prior to that had ample estates in the Vipava Valley.
