Railway station

The railway station is one of the rare older buildings of Nova Gorica, which was built after World War II as a new town. The station remained next to the demarcation of the border between Italy and Yugoslavia, which even ran along the railway lines in some parts. It was built by 1906, when in the summer there was a celebratory opening of a new, parallel railway line which connected the empire with Trieste. The railway was laid from Villach to Trieste and was a strategic route of the empire along the new border with Italy.
In the Gorica of that time, an extensive elongated station building was constructed with a central projection.  The first class station was the largest and the most beautiful in Slovenia. During World War I only a bare shell remained of the station.  The railway lost its significance with the demarcation between the three countries. In spite of this, the Italians renovated the station. Later, after the demarcation of the border between Italy and socialist Yugoslavia, the station was even more cut off from the old town, as it belonged to Yugoslavia and Gorica belonged to Italy. It has been preserved with no major remodelling.
The railway station has remained an interesting stage for the museum trains when their steam engines arrive, puffing at the station.
