Kostanjevica – a local heritage gem

Located on a hill over Nova Gorica, the Franciscan Monastery Kostanjevica is particularly notable for the crypt of the Bourbon dynasty, holding the remains of the last King of France and his descendants. A special highlight of the monastery is the Škrabec library with a precious collection of old tomes. Take a stroll through the park and marvel at one of the most impressive collections of Bourbon roses in the world. It's no coincidence that the rose is also the symbol of Nova Gorica.

The church interior holds a rich religious heritage with plaster mouldings considered to be the finest example of 17th century stucco in Slovenia, and the largest in the Primorska region. The striking altarpiece depicting Mary beneath a chestnut tree is painted on stone. Historically significant are the ledger stones of noble families and aristocrats from Gorizia from the 17th to the mid-18th century. The Bourbon crypt is located beneath the presbytery of the church. The guide relays the tumultuous tale of the exiled Charles X, last King of France. The king brought his family to Gorizia where he died shortly thereafter. The tale of the royal Bourbons will be wrapped up with a walk through the garden, and a presentation of the intoxicating Bourbon roses.

The tour of Kostanjevica is concluded with a visit to the extensive Škrabec library with 11,500 volumes. Particularly valuable are the incunabula and the first grammar book of the Slovenian language.
